South London Special League is a unique award-winning registered charity that provides opportunities for disabled people in South London, male and female, to improve their lives through participation in competitive sport on a regular basis.
By achieving this aim, disabled players can increase their opportunities to meet new people, socialise, and gain new experiences. All of these contribute towards their improved health and well-being, physical fitness, heightened self esteem, raised aspirations and indeed overall happiness.
The organisation was launched in 2004 to provide a competitive football league for young disabled people and in so doing to break down the social and environmental barriers to inclusion. This successful formula has been used to open up a wider range of sports to our diverse disabled community of all ages.
Since its conception over five thousand disabled players have experienced the fun and friendship of sport through the South London Special League. The project has been managed by Sharon Brokenshire, MBE, and has received a variety of awards for excellence that demonstrate the level of commitment of members of staff and the management committee.
